A Hull Road Councillor has today praised the team-working
and community spirit that has resulted in a ‘Tour de Tang Hall’ event being
held this Sunday
15 June.

The Tour de Tang Hall has been organised by the joint
Hull Road and Heworth ward teams, which include local councillors, local police
teams, City of York Council, Tang Hall Residents’ Association, University of
York Students’ Union and Tang Hall Community Centre - with support from Joseph
Rowntree Housing Trust and the team at the new Derwenthorpe development.
Coun. Neil Barnes is Labour Councillor for Hull Road
Ward, which includes part of the Tang Hall estate. He said:
“Over the few past few months, it has been absolutely
fantastic to see ward partners come together with the joint mission to organise
an event that will really showcase the best of the Tang Hall community spirit.
“We were looking for something big and bold and as the
Tour de France was coming up, I suggested simply a ‘Tour de Tang Hall’. But
full credit must go to the various partners in the joint ward teams who have
taken that so far and so fast that we are now looking forward to a fantastic
event this Sunday, on Father’s Day.
“Visitors to the Tour de Tang Hall will be pleasantly
surprised at the almost entirely off road circuit of the area, taking in the
Sustrans cycle path, Hull Road Park, Osbaldwick Beck and St Nicholas’ Fields.
This is Tang Hall – an area with much green space and open areas available for
the enjoyment of the community.
“This event is just the latest step in an ongoing drive
to build community spirit in the area that I’ve witnessed since I was elected
in May 2011. Tang Hall residents are taking a real pride in their area. It’s
challenging times for councils as Government cuts really begin to bite. Yet, to
work with people such as I do in the Hull Road ward, I feel so fortunate to be
working alongside such passion and drive.”
The Tour de Tang Hall is being held on Sunday
15 June
between 1pm and 4pm. Participants can
register to join the route at one of three community activity hubs: Tang Hall
Community Centre, Hull Road Park and the Derwenthorpe Super Sustainable Centre.
Participants can walk, cycle, toddle or scoot the circular route and those who
complete the circuit, collecting wristbands at each hub, will receive goodie
bags and a certificate.
